Maggie Middleton has lived in the Hlatikulu district of Swaziland all her life, raising two children on her own after losing her Husband when they were young. Maggie has always cared for the people in her district and is loved and respected by many.
Maggie started the Ethukeleni Orphanage project after our visit in 2004 and continues to support Grandmothers caring for orphaned children with the funds raised by Mamies Helping Hands.

Hklatikulu Food Run

These Grandmothers are supplied with food parcels to help them care for the children.

                                                                                                 Grandmother Lizzie is 83 years old.

Lizzie has just recovered from a stroke but is now back at home caring for 13 children. Born in South Africa and having moved to Swaziland after marrying a Swazi man, she has been taking children into her full-time care for the last 43 years. Being a teacher by profession, she has schooled many of them as well as feeding and taking on the main care role in their lives.

There are currently 13 children within Lizzie’s care. She has just one employee at the home who helps cook.. As well as feeding the children that live with her, Lizzie feeds over 50 malnourished children from the local church on Sundays, who come back to her house for lunch.

They live far from the nearest town (Hlathikhulu which 1 hour’s drive away) on Lizzie’s own property where she lives in one small home and a has few traditional huts that accommodate some of the children and one that she uses as a birthing clinic (she is also a midwife).

Grandmother Rebecca

Rebecca lives on a small farm with her four children and her sisters three children, cares for her elderly mother and unwell sister.

She is a home based carer and walks over 20km to care for the sick and elderly that are caring for young children. She helps Maggie with the local food rounds.
